At this stage, superovulation is induced (i.e., stimulation of the maturation of several eggs in one menstrual cycle). For successful IVF, it is necessary to obtain several mature eggs at once during one menstrual cycle. This possibility, which provides a greater chance of success, is provided by the use of hormonal drugs. These medications allow you to control the course of the menstrual cycle and calculate the time of egg maturation with the utmost accuracy.
Follicle puncture is performed transvaginally (through the vaginal vault) under the control of ultrasound. Due to its minimal trauma, transvaginal ovarian puncture is performed on an outpatient basis. At the request of patients, anesthesia can be performed with the help of drugs that induce medication sleep. Ovarian puncture is performed on an empty stomach. On the day of the puncture, both spouses come to the clinic.
The eggs obtained during follicle puncture are placed in special cups with a culture medium. During the embryological stage, the culture cups are kept in an incubator, where conditions similar to those in the mother’s body are maintained (exactly the same temperature and carbon dioxide and oxygen content). After receiving the eggs from the woman, the man donates sperm.
Embryo transfer is carried out with a special atraumatic catheter, without resorting to dilation of the cervical canal, so this procedure is painless and does not require anesthesia.
